Chapter Spotlight

Albert Farr, B.S., M.A., Ph.D.

Albert FarrAlbert Farr is one of our esteemed faculty members with St. Petersburg College and the Dr. Johnnie Ruth Clarke Chapter of the NCBAA. He has been with the college since the Fall of 2002 and has taught several courses in the discipline of English including Composition, African American Literature, and Contemporary American Literature. Though he holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in English, a Master's Degree in English Literature, and Ph.D. in Higher Education all from Iowa State University, he was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois and brings with him the experiences of working with some of the most prominent politicians, academicians, and business persons in the Midwest.

Some of Albert's professional interests stem from his research in multiculturalism, diversity, and community college administration. In the past he has been commissioned to speak on the recruitment and retention and of minority students, various pedagogical strategies for student engagement, and the influence of hip-hop music on the urban youth. Most recently, he has presented collaborative research at the 2011 Annual Convention of the AACC on the profile of the African American Male Community College CEO.

His current research includes a qualitative study that seeks to understand how African American college presidents and chancellors maintain their ethnic identity while navigating through a predominately White institution, while also preparing for another presentation on a new Black identity model that will supplement Cross' Model of Nigrescence. He hopes it will be ready for the 2012 NASPA conference in the Spring.

When he finds time to relax, he enjoys watching old movies, reading old books, and spending time with his fiancee and two dogs. Admittedly, he also has a shopping addiction that has yielded him over 200 pairs of jeans and 400 pairs of shoes!
