Math Teachers Share Their Ideas for Engaging Teenagers

Many of the activities in Classroom Ideas for High School Math can be adapted for use in the earlier grades. You'll find lists of web sites and other resources with hundreds of interesting math problems for your students. Keep watching ENC Focus for future issues on middle school and elementary school math ideas. You can share your ideas by sending them to the ENC Focus editors at editor@enc.org

Classroom Calendar Entries Connect Math, Science and Other Subjects
Classroom Calendar entries contain practical ideas for activities and resources selected by content specialists. Many entries are correlated to national science and mathematics standards. A good example of this is Forensic Friday: CCSI--Classroom Crime Scene Investigation (Grades 9-12), identified as a science topic on the May Calendar. As the chemistry teacher who wrote the "crime scene" project points out, "A study of ballistics provides an exemplary confluence of math and science. Students can use their knowledge of velocity, projectile motion, and gravity to learn how experts calculate the location of the weapon relative to the victim. Ratios of the weight of the propellant charge to the weight of the projectile, the length of bore, and the density of propellant grains are all necessary considerations along with muzzle pressures and spatial distribution of fragments."
