Section 1009.286, Florida Statutes, requires students who transfer to one of Florida’s state universities to earn their bachelor’s degrees in the most efficient way possible by avoiding excess credit hours.
If you enter a state college or university for the first time in or after the fall of 2009 and transfer to a state university, you may pay a surcharge equal to 50 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 120 percent of the number of credit hours required to complete the bachelor's degree program. For example, if the length of the bachelor’s program is 120 credit hours, you may be subject to this excess hour surcharge for any credits attempted beyond 144 credit hours (120 x 120%).
To avoid the excess hour surcharge, you should identify a “transfer program” early on and be advised of the admission requirements for that bachelor's program, including the approved common prerequisites. Enrollment in courses not required for the intended major may contribute to a potential excess hour surcharge. There are some exceptions, such as withdrawals due to medical emergencies and credits taken by active duty military students.
Make every effort to enroll in and successfully complete those courses that are required on your first attempt. All grades – including grades of W (withdrawal) and F (failing) – are considered in the number of credits attempted. Tutoring and academic support is available to help you succeed in each class.
