Faculty governance

The Faculty Governance Organization provides a vehicle through which Faculty members may have input into administrative decisions of the College.  The President of FGO sits on the President's Cabinet and provides input into policy and budgetary discussions.  General policies and implementation of the Faculty Governance Organization are published in the FGO Constitution located in Appendix B of the Faculty Manual.

The SPC Faculty Governance Organization also provides the forum and means for Faculty to initiate input and participate in academic decision making and self-governance.  FGO, having a multi-site, hierarchal structure, from departmental representatives to a Senate Executive Board whose Chair sits on the President’s Cabinet, allows opportunities for ample input, critical discussion and formulation of recommendations.  Recognition by the College administration and by FGO that cooperation and collaboration are key elements in facilitating quality development and progress within the College continually supports this mutual commitment.

Faculty participation, responsibility and authority are further ensured through membership on these College committees:

              1.  Calendar Committee

              2.  CLAST Appeals Committee and CLAST Alternates

              3.  Curriculum and Instruction Committee

              4.  Disciplinary Board

              5.  Discrimination Grievance Hearing Panel

              6.  Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Committee

              7.  Faculty Compensation Committee (a sub-committee of FGO)

              8.  Faculty Grievance Committee

              9.  Financial Aid Committee

            10.  Insurance Committee

            11.  Instructional Technology Advisory Group (ITAG)

            12.  Library Committee

            13.  Sexual Harassment Committee

            14.  Student Grievances Committee

At the beginning of each academic year the President of Faculty Senate extends an invitation for Faculty members to volunteer for committees.  Faculty members for these college committees are recommended to the SPC President by the President of the Faculty Senate.  The President of the College formally appoints Faculty, staff, and, as appropriate, students to each committee.

Information on each committee is provided in the Faculty Manual located on the Human Resources Web page.  The following is an example of how the committees are described:

         Excerpt from Faculty Manual

Calendar Committee

(See also P6Hx23-1.905)

Charge:  This Committee is responsible for developing and recommending the College calendar for the ensuing year.  The Committee considers State Board of Education Rules that are designed to insure articulation with other colleges, College employment policies and procedures, College events, holidays, registration schedules, beginning and ending dates of each academic term, and other dates that are vital to the successful and efficient operation of the College in the development of the proposed calendar.

Membership:  The membership of this Committee normally consists of two instructional Faculty members (from different programs) from CL, SP/G, TS and HC; one instructional Faculty member from AC; one student from CL, SP/G, TS, HC, and AC; one career staff member from CL, SP/G, TS, HC, AC, and DO; one Librarian; one Counselor; one Assistant Provost; one Registrar; one representative from Human Resources, one representative from Business Services; one representative from Administrative Information Systems; and the Vice President, Educational and Student Services.  The President appoints the chairperson and members of the Committees.

Term of Office:  One-year term beginning in August.  Meetings normally occur during August and December.

Responsible to:  The President.

The committees present recommendations for changes and implementation recommendations to fellow Faculty through departmental representatives and the FGO Web site and to the President and Board of Trustees through leadership representatives.  There are continual feedback opportunities through subject-focused committees, FGO representatives and Web site forums (the FGO Discussion Board) with provisions for reassessing, amending and improving academic function.  These multiple channels facilitate involvement and the ongoing refinement of representing change and growth with Faculty significantly affecting outcome in academics and self-governance.

Faculty responsibilities for curriculum development are described in 3.4.1 and 3.4.10.
