Cataloging

The Technical Services staff at Seminole Community Library at St. Petersburg College use the premier academic automated integrated system, known as ALEPH, to catalog all MARC formats. ALEPH indexes all resources of Florida's community college libraries into one shared database.

The Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed., Revised (1998), are followed for descriptive cataloging and entry form in accordance with the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations.

Deborah Fritz’s Cataloging With AACR2 and MARC21, 2nd ed. (2004) and OCLC’s Bibliographic Formats and Standards, 3rd ed., (2002) are also consulted for further guidance on interpreting the rules of AACR2 and LCRI.

Library of Congress Subject Headings (latest edition) is the authority list consulted for the subject headings chosen for materials in the library's collection.

Dewey Decimal Classification (latest edition) is used for classification of non-fiction materials.

All Government Documents are classified using Dewey Decimal Classification.

Children's and fiction videocassettes and DVDs, as well as CDs, are classified by genre and assigned accession numbers.

Fiction books and fiction audiobooks are classified by genre and author's last name.
