Do you have the qualities we're looking for?
Effective tutors possess more than just knowledge about a subject; they also possess the following traits and abilities:
- A genuine interest in other people, coupled with the desire to help people and the motivation to acquire the skills necessary to be helpful.
- A solid background in the academic area or particular course being tutored.
- Good study habits and attitudes.
- Patience, tolerance, good humor, and reliability.
- The ability to be flexible and to tolerate ambiguity. (Although there are general guidelines and effective techniques, there are no neat, step-by-step approaches to tutoring).
- A positive self concept.
- The ability to communicate effectively, which includes listening well and using language appropriate to a given situation.
- A knowledge of one's personal approach to learning coupled with an understanding that such an approach is not the only approach.
- The willingness to receive as well as give constructive feedback.
