Do you have the qualities we're looking for?

Effective tutors possess more than just knowledge about a subject; they also possess the following traits and abilities:

  • A genuine interest in other people, coupled with the desire to help people and the motivation to acquire the skills necessary to be helpful.
  • A solid background in the academic area or particular course being tutored.
  • Good study habits and attitudes.
  • Patience, tolerance, good humor, and reliability.
  • The ability to be flexible and to tolerate ambiguity. (Although there are general guidelines and effective techniques, there are no neat, step-by-step approaches to tutoring).
  • A positive self concept.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, which includes listening well and using language appropriate to a given situation.
  • A knowledge of one's personal approach to learning coupled with an understanding that such an approach is not the only approach.
  • The willingness to receive as well as give constructive feedback.
