Summer 2008 |
Provost's Perspective
Ten Years Young! This fall, we will be celebrating 10 years of excellence in teaching, learning and service to the community on the Seminole Campus. We opened our doors in August of 1998 to about 800 mostly evening students enrolled in a smattering of liberal arts and sciences classes. This fall we anticipate 3000 SPC students (and other 500+ University partner students) will be cramming our classrooms and benefiting from the same high quality of programs and services the “freshman class” of 1998 experienced. There have been many changes, of course. From that smattering of courses and baseline services we have grown into a full service campus with a wide range of programs and activities, including (in addition to the AA transfer degree) three associate in science degrees in Hospitality Management, Parks and Leisure Services, and Digital Media (with tracks in web design, game development, video production and graphic design) and over a dozen special interest student clubs and organizations. |
 |
Look for more classes in the fall term, brand new programs (like the exciting new Early College program that will bring full time dual enrollment students to the Campus), and even more parking (always an important consideration). SPC-Seminole is also looking to take leadership in the “green”/sustainability arena, with courses, activities (plan to join the environmental club!) and potentially even a fourth new AS program in Environmental Science Technology.
If you visit us this summer you will likely see some renovation going on, some parking lots being expanded, and people boxing up stuff as we move out some “district” functions and move in more faculty and staff to support educational programs and activities on this site. We are, for example, going to be the home Campus of the new College-wide Dean for the science programs at SPC -- especially important given the need to upgrade our labs, explore new environmental/sustainability programs, and develop the natural habitat park and environmental center just north of the current campus buildings.
There will be much more to say about these and other initiatives in the months ahead. Watch The Nexus for further updates on our progress, and if you are a student, contact Student Activities Coordinator Dawn Waechterto find out how you can be involved in the process!

Early College
Seminole/eCampus
|
The Early College Program is a partnership between St. Petersburg College and Pinellas County Schools that offers new and innovative options for high school students.
Students entering grades 11 and 12 in Pinellas County high schools, as well as private and home-schooled students, who meet dual enrollment eligibility standards and reside in Pinellas County, will have the opportunity to attend the Early College Program.
Private and home-schooled students will be required to enroll in a public high school to participate. Students will remain dual-enrolled in their home high schools (allowing them to participate in all extracurricular activities) and in classes at St. Petersburg College.
Judy Dellert, Early College Program/Dual Enrollment Coordinator (south county) and Margaret Miller, Administrative Specialist will be on Seminole Campus to attend to student's needs. For more information on this program, kindly contact the Provost Office at 727 394 6111.

Marine Science Program
Seminole's Marine Science program is an exciting new way to learn about the Gulf ecosystem. It combines lecture, lab and field work to give the students a unique learning experience. We have partnered with Tampa Bay Watch and The Clearwater Marine Aquarium to provide unique field experiences, volunteer opportunities and internships. Our students have snorkeled with cow nosed rays, kayaked the mangrove swamps, dissected sharks, rescued and rehabbed sea turtles and replanted local salt marshes just to name a few experiences.
We are currently working on a "Discover SCUBA" program and planning to partner with the Science Center and several area charter boat captains to expand our program. The program is only one semester old but we have meet with great success providing our students with a "once in a life time" educational experience and the community with both volunteers and interns helping the local environment.
The approximate extra cost for the program is about $80 - $100...but the experiences will last a lifetime!

New Dean on Campus
Five of the six academic deans who will lead the college’s general education subject areas – natural science, communications, mathematics, fine arts/humanities, social science and business technology – were announced this week.
The dean structure is another piece of an overall reorganization of academic administration designed to better serve students’ needs and to save money.
The new deans are John Vaughan, natural science; Martha Campbell, communications; Sharon Griggs, mathematics; Jonathan Steele, fine arts/humanities; and Joseph Smiley, social science. A search is underway for the sixth dean, who will oversee business technology. |

John Vaughan
Dean of Natural Science
|
John Vaughan recently completed his 15th year at the college.
For more than four years, Vaughan has been program director for Natural Sciences and Wellness at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. Before that, he was a biology instructor at SP/G. Vaughan also spent two years as a biology professor at Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y. and was a field zoology instructor at Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie, a field station associated with Ohio State University.
He earned his bachelor’s in biology from Appalachian State University in 1980; a master’s in entomology from the University of Florida in 1985; and a master’s in zoology from Ohio State University. Through Ohio State, he conducted doctoral research in the Galapagos Islands studying lizard ecology and behavior.
"I am excited to have this opportunity to enhance academic quality and consistency across all campuses of the college," he said.
His office will be at the Seminole Campus. |
New Seminole/eCampus Student Clubs
Environmental Club
We had a successful first year as the Seminole Campus Environmental Club...but next year should be bigger and better.
We started recycling on campus and are planning to expand the program next year. We also hope to grow our membership and have a "Earth Day" celebration and plant a tree for Arbor Day. Our students are interested in sponsoring at least one community outreach project per semester...possibly a Fishing Tournament with Academy Prep and a beach clean up project. Join us today!

Ethics Club
The Seminole Ethics Club Online is a club that meets almost exclusively online. We have had between 20 - 35 members at any given time. Most of the activity takes place in Discussion Forums on our ANGEL site. Students who would like to join may do so by visiting ANGEL and searching "Find Groups" and entering the search term ethicsclub. They may then join.
The issues are usually current event discussions involving ethics-related topics. Linda Cole is the current president President of the club and I am the moderator.

Parks and Leisure Services Program
| “Students at St. Petersburg College will gain strategic business competencies in preparing for professional positions in recreation, parks and leisure services,” according to Larry Goldsmith, the newly hired Instructor-in-Charge of the Parks and Leisure Services Department for St. Petersburg College. This is the message Larry asks us to share with potential students, those individuals changing careers and those hoping for upward mobility in their careers. |
 |
| Though Larry won’t technically be starting as a full-time faculty member until the fall, over the summer he will be working on curriculum planning, strengthening “industry” relations and reaching out to potential students through recruiting and marketing efforts. Do contact him to find out more about the program. |

Introducing Your New SPC Librarian
Jennifer Gregor has been appointed Information Services Librarian for the Seminole and Gibbs campuses. She will begin working at the Seminole campus June 9, 2008. Jennifer is a native of Florida, although she has lived in three other southeastern states. She came back to Florida after finishing her master’s degree in library science from the University of Kentucky. During her undergraduate years, she studied English and Music at Berea College in Berea, KY. |
 |
Jennifer says, “I discovered my love for teaching while working with the TBLC’s librarian training programs and am looking forward to my teaching opportunities at St. Petersburg College. SPC and the Seminole campus are a great fit for me, allowing me to integrate my interest in using cutting-edge technology with my love of teaching and learning.”
She recently got married, and she and her husband enjoy spending time outdoors, especially boating in their antique (and leaky!) 1957 Feather Craft boat. She also enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, and working on any one of their ongoing home renovation projects.

New VSI Series is an Eye Catcher
The Seminole Community Library now offers the Very Short Introduction series, published by Oxford University Press. Covering nearly every topic you can imagine, these titles provide the perfect introduction to subjects you previously knew little or nothing about. |
 |
If there’s a gap in your knowledge on a certain topic, or you need to get a sense of a subject in a hurry, the Very Short Introduction Series may be the best source for you. Most titles have less than 150 pages and all are pocket-size. The subjects currently available in the library include Art & Design, Biological & Physical Sciences, Classics, Ethics, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Religion, Sociology, Women Studies, and much, much more. Whether preparing for an assignment or in need of leisure reading material with an intellectual appeal, this series can help to fill the gap in knowledge of almost any discipline. Most importantly, some of the most challenging topics are made easily readable. For more information about the series, contact your SPC Librarian. You can even learn more about the series and join in the discussion with the authors and readers of the books through the new VSI blog: http://blog.oup.com/category/uk/vsi/.
