Provost's Perspective
We’re off to the start of another term at SE/eC, again with record enrollment (both up over 12% from last spring) and the promise of more events, more activities, and new facilities. Two new faculty (Dr. Coco Collins in Parks, Recreation and Leisure, and Dr. Wendy Mitchell in Speech) have joined us, along with Kirsten Tersteegen – the new instructional assistant (reading and writing) in the Learning Commons. They will be welcome additions to our already “all star” cast.
For those of you who are new, we welcome you, wish you all the best in your classes, and hope you will get involved in the life of the campus. There are plenty of opportunities to do so – just check with Activities Coordinator Dawn Waechter in the door on your left when you enter the UP Building (from the entrance closest to the TL Building door). By the time this newsletter is issued, we’ll be in the middle of our “welcome back” cookouts. That will be a great occasion to check out the options – whether you are a new student or just one who has decided it was time to get involved in campus life. This semester will be particularly interesting for the Student Government Association as plans are made for a temporary student lounge area inside UP 102, just across from the Student Activities Office.
More building space is coming on line, including the new Conference Center and offices in the library – news about that space will be coming later this month. We’ll be looking at other options for moving faculty and staff to meet our growth needs as the Administrative Information Systems and Networks staff move off campus to the Epicenter in Largo. New programs, new people, new opportunities, and lots of movement -- standard operating procedure for SE/eC. We hope you’ll help us continue to make this site great by giving us your ideas, your support, and your participation.

Hello, my name is Rachel Runacres. I was born in Clearwater, Florida and have lived in Seminole my entire life. My family consists of my father Owen, mother Claire, older brother Owen, and older sister Heather. I am the only native Floridian in my family, who relocated to Seminole from Long Island, New York prior to my birth.
I graduated from Seminole High School in 2005. While there I was involved in the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and was a distance runner on both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. I decided to attend St. Petersburg College for the fall semester following graduation because of its convenient location and reputation.
Last January I was given the opportunity to work on campus and I gladly took advantage. I work as a student assistant under the direction of Dawn Waechter. Although I am based in the office, I can be found in and around campus, whether it be popping popcorn in the lobby or helping out with outside events planned for fellow students. As well as working in student activities, I have been employed by Lake Seminole Square Assisted Living Facility since the age of fourteen.
As well as taking classes and working on campus, I have become involved with the Seminole campus’ Student Government Association. With becoming a member, I have been able to serve the community through volunteering at different functions such as the Seminole Pow-Wow parade and the Seminole Sings scholarship competition. I have also been able to have fun on campus while serving fellow students by helping with events such as the welcome back bashes, Constitution Day, the Hispanic Heritage Celebration, and Sundae Monday.
As for the future, I will be receiving my A.A. degree at the end of this semester. Although I am not certain where I will continue my education at this point in time, I plan on receiving my bachelor’s of science in nursing and maybe eventually pursuing a master’s degree in nursing. I hope to one day make a rewarding career out of being able to help others in need.

Introducing LIbrary Wiki
The Seminole Campus proudly introduces its very own Library Wiki to engage faculty and staff [do remember to bookmark this site!] in content development on any and every aspect of library services including collection and resource development, information literacy, library policies and more. We are starting off with a few headings that hopefully will grow as we receive more contributions and faculty-librarian collaboration continues!

Introductions
Kudos
SPC Web & Instructional Technology Services is being honored in November by the Instruction Technology Counsel (ITC). You can see a complete list of past winners (which includes Anita Naravane from last year, Kevin Morgan, and Jan Ballantine) at http://www.itcnetwork.org/awardswinners.htm.
ITC announced the winners for its 2007 Awards for Excellence in Distance Education. St. Petersburg College won the Outstanding Technical Support and Service category.
Seminole Campus Provost Dr. James Olliver remarked that "The WITS Department and related areas have long done an excellent job of providing service and support for technology across College. It is only appropriate that they be recognized for their extraordinary work. Receiving this ITC award, honoring SPC in a very crowded field of outstanding institutions around the nation, only reinforces what we’ve come to know and appreciate.”
Associate Provost Lynda Womer added, “Our WITS department is top-notch. At SPC we are well-aware of that fact. It is so nice to know they are receiving national recognition for their innovation and the assistance they provide to us on a daily basis. ITC told us the competition for this award was fierce, and that WITS was “head and shoulders” above the rest. This is a well-deserved honor.”
ITC offers its members leadership, information and resources to expand and enhance distance learning through the effective use of technology. An affiliated council of the American Association of Community Colleges established in 1977, ITC represents higher education institutions in the United States and Canada, and is leader in advancing distance education. |

What's Up @ the Library?
This month, lets looks at a range of library services that will come in handy throughout the course of this Spring session:
- Ask A Librarian
Ask a Librarian is a free online information service provided by Florida libraries. Real people in real time answer your questions, help you find information, or point you in the right direction to get what you need. The opening hours are 10 a.m.- Midnight ET, Sunday - Thursday and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday – Saturday. You may submit your question via e-mail 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
- How to use the Library Online Catalog
This tutorial demonstrates how to search LINCC, the College's Library Catalog, to find books, videos, sound recordings, and other material. Special limiters are demonstrated, such as limiting by library location or by material type.
- Library Database Online Tutorials
This lists all the databases offered by the College and their corresponding online tutorial on how to navigate a specific database.
- Subject-specific Research on Internet
The Intute: Virtual Training Suite provides free Internet tutorials on every subject taught to help you learn how to get the best from the Web for your education and research. Do check out the Internet Detective link.
- Time Management Tool
Use this calculator to help you organize and plan all of your research assignments. Enter the date in which your paper is due, and it will create a step-by-step research plan and timeline. Along with the timeline, the calculator provides websites that tutor you throughout the research and writing process.
- Citation Help
The Citation Machine will create American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA) citations for print and electronic sources. The program also offers an example of how the parenthetical will look within the text of your research paper. This website was created by David Warlick of the Landmark Project in October of 2000.
- Anti-Plagiarism Tutorials
University of Southern Mississippi Plagiarism tutorial and the Plagiarism Court (Flash) will provide some ideas on how not to fall in the trap of cheating via copying and pasting text. Check out the one-stop shop on Turnitin.com.
