Ten Years Young! This fall, we will be celebrating 10 years of excellence in teaching, learning and service to the community on the Seminole Campus. We opened our doors in August of 1998 to about 800 mostly evening students enrolled in a smattering of liberal arts and sciences classes. This fall we anticipate 3000 SPC students (and other 500+ University partner students) will be cramming our classrooms and benefiting from the same high quality of programs and services the “freshman class” of 1998 experienced. There have been many changes, of course. From that smattering of courses and baseline services we have grown into a full service campus with a wide range of programs and activities, including (in addition to the AA transfer degree) three associate in science degrees in Hospitality Management, Parks and Leisure Services, and Digital Media (with tracks in web design, game development, video production and graphic design) and over a dozen special interest student clubs and organizations.
Look for more classes in the fall term, brand new programs (like the exciting new Early College program that will bring full time dual enrollment students to the Campus), and even more parking (always an important consideration). SPC-Seminole is also looking to take leadership in the “green”/sustainability arena, with courses, activities (plan to join the environmental club!) and potentially even a fourth new AS program in Environmental Science Technology.
If you visit us this summer you will likely see some renovation going on, some parking lots being expanded, and people boxing up stuff as we move out some “district” functions and move in more faculty and staff to support educational programs and activities on this site. We are, for example, going to be the home Campus of the new College-wide Dean for the science programs at SPC -- especially important given the need to upgrade our labs, explore new environmental/sustainability programs, and develop the natural habitat park and environmental center just north of the current campus buildings.
There will be much more to say about these and other initiatives in the months ahead. Watch The Nexus for further updates on our progress, and if you are a student, contact Student Activities Coordinator Dawn Waechterto find out how you can be involved in the process!
