| Placement Testing
The purpose of the SPC placement test is to measure entry-level skills in the areas of writing, reading, and mathematics. State law mandates that state-supported institutions test the entry-level skills of their students.
This test is not an admissions test that can be passed or failed. Its sole purpose is to assist us in determining your best course placement. Be prepared to do your best when you take the Placement Test.
On the day of the test, bring a photo I.D. with your signature . Arrive rested, stay relaxed, and do your best. Calculators, dictionaries, cell phones, pagers, backpacks, purses, or other materials and belongings are NOT permitted.
You may retake the placement test one additional time based upon the recommendations of the counseling office before you begin your initial session's classes. Before you retest, it is strongly recommended that you take time to review the subject matter of the test you are retaking. The placement test cannot be used to exit out of a college preparatory course in which you are enrolled or have been enrolled.
You need to take the placement test if you are a new student seeking a degree and you have not completed coursework at another college in the areas of English, reading, or mathematics. If you are non-degree seeking but want to take courses that require Placement Test scores, you will have to take the test. Placement Test scores are valid for two years. If you have taken the SAT or ACT within the past two years, check with the Counseling Office staff to determine if these scores can be used for placement purposes in lieu of Placement Test scores.
Students needing testing accommodations due to a disability should contact SPC's Office of Services for Students with Disabilities before taking the Placement Test.
The Computerized Placement Test (CPT) is available on a walk-in basis at the Seminole Campus. Students may begin testing any time during the hours listed below. Allow at least two hours to complete the full test.
After you take the placement test, complete the Interactive Student Orientation. You will then see a counselor or academic advisor regarding your CPT scores, course placement, and program requirements. See the Seminole Campus Academic Counseling page for information about office hours, Counseling/Advising staff members, and how to contact them.
