SPCHS Principal's Notes

Dear Parents,

The school year is off to a great start. Our sophomores have adjusted nicely and our juniors and seniors are doing well in their college classes.

Sophomores have are working collaboratively on projects in World History; reading a variety of texts in Language Arts; and beginning labs in Chemistry. Steve Gaylord, from American Stage, is teaching our sophomores how to write plays which will be read by American Stage Actors. We will notify parents when the "reading" takes place so students and their families may attend the performance.

As a reminder, Florida mandates require that students enroll in a total of six (6) classes each semester. To help meet this mandate for the fall 2008 term, counselors have enrolled students with five credits in a an express class which began September 23, This class, SLS 1711, is a college-level peer tutoring course taught by Ms. Roberta Newman. Students will receive 2 hours of elective credit for the time they spend each week in activities that support their academic studies. Ms. Newman is responsible for facilitating this process including helping the students learn practices and strategies that will ensure their success in college classes. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Connie Boyle or Mrs. Starla Metz.

Congratulations to our Student Government Association (SGA) candidates and officers. It was exciting to see the campaigns and listen to students’ speeches. The first Quad Event of the year, highlighting SPC clubs was held on September 18th. Our students enjoyed the activities and food while learning how they can participate in the wonderful activities that SPC has to offer.

The College Night meeting for seniors and their parents on September 18th was very successful. Mrs. Betts and Ms. Boyle answered questions regarding college applications and scholarships. Opportunities for scholarships and deadlines will be shared with seniors during senior meetings so it is imperative that seniors attend these meetings. Seniors don’t forget to check PrepHq and the "Counselor’s Corner" on the SPCHS website weekly for important information from Ms. Boyle and Mrs. Betts.

Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Delgato, curriculum specialist, on her recent promotion. Mrs. Delgato is in the final stages of completing her doctorate and has accepted a position as the Director of Curriculum and Student Success within the College of Nursing. Mrs. Delgato is an outstanding member of our team and will be missed. Mrs. Delgato and I will be working closely to ensure the continuation of service to our students and staff until we fill her position. Best wishes to Mrs. Delgato in her new position!

I am very proud to announce some outstanding accomplishments by our students. Dylan Sprague has been selected as a 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist; Darrington Miller has been selected as a 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Program Semifinalist; and Amy-Joy Thompson, a 2008 graduate of SPCHS, has been selected as the National Hospice Volunteer Award winner in the Young Adult category. Amy and her family will be recognized in Dallas, Texas later in the year.

Congratulations to these students and all of our students for their exceptional achievement. Please notify me if your child wins an award or is recognized in the community so we may honor him or her at the SPCHS Move-up Awards.

Thank you for your continued support. I am confident this will be a great year for our students.

Sincerely,

Starla Metz, principal
