2012 SPC Jazz Festival

The fourth annual SPC Jazz Festival includes 3 concerts and 1 workshop: 

Thursday, 1/26 includes the Alfredo Rivero Trio and La Lucha with singer Jun Bustamante. 

Friday, 1/27 features singer Kathy Kosins with the Helios Jazz Orchestra. 

Saturday, 1/28 is a Brazilian showcase with Brazilian band O Som Do Jazz and pianist/composer Antonio Adolfo. Antonio Adolfo also leads a Brazilian music workshop on 1/28 from 11 AM - 12:30.

Alfredo Rivero Trio and La Lucha with singer Jun Bustamante. 



The Alfredo Rivero Trio
is a Latin Jazz and World music trio formed with Patrick Hernly - a young multi- instrumentalist on drums, Yovanny Roque - a famous classical bass player from Camaguey, Cuba and Alfredo Rivero - a composer, guitar player, and producer born in La Habana, Cuba and a graduate of Amadeo Roldan’s conservatory.
La Lucha is a Tampa Bay-based group that consists of friends from three different parts of the world; Colombia, Mexico & United States.  Its members are bassist Alejandro Arenas, drummer  Mark Feinman and pianist John O’Leary.  Their repertoire includes a diverse mixture of jazz-inspired Pop renditions, Latin rhythms and original compositions. Jun Bustamante is a singer-songwriter located in St. Petersburg.  Born in Japan and raised in Venezuela, Jun has been exposed to a wide variety of music and incorporates this into her unique approach.

Singer Kathy Kosins with the Helios Jazz Orchestra. 


Kathy Kosins was and bred during the Motown era of Detroit, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was in the early eighties. As a lead vocalist she recorded for both Carrere (Sony) and Quality Records and later toured with Was/Not Was.
In the early ‘90s, Kathy fell in love with the freedom of the jazz. Kathy has shared the stage and performed with numerous names in the jazz and R&B world including Cyrus Chestnut, Randy Brecker, Javon Jackson, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Greg Hutchinson, Red Holloway, Grant Green Jr., Eric Marienthal, Mitch Ryder, Michael Henderson and others.  Her latest projects include “Rhapsody in Boop” -featuring the music of Betty Boop and “The Ladies of Cool”, singing in the styles of Julie London, Anita O’Day, June Christy and Chris Connor.

The Helios Jazz Orchestra was formed in late 2008 as ensemble-in-residence at St. Petersburg College and is directed by SPC professor David Manson. Helios has been active performing at the Clearwater Jazz Festival, Palladium Theater, Ybor Jazz Festival, WMNF Jazz Jam, the Salvador Dali Museum, SPC Jazz Festival and other events.

Brazilian music workshop with Antonio Adolfo from 11 AM - 12:30.
Brazilian showcase with Brazilian band O Som Do Jazz and pianist/composer Antonio Adolfo 7:30 pm.


In 1985 Antonio created his own music school in Rio de Janeiro and later in Hollywood, Florida, with more than 700 students enrolled.  Antonio published a series of music education material in Brazil and abroad.  His book, Brazilian Music Workshop, is considered an authoritative source of Brazilian music. 

O Som Do Jazz features Rio de Janeiro singer Andrea Moraes Manson and a crew of experienced musicians from Brasil, Columbia, Cuba and the U.S., including Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, David Cubillos, Austin Vickrey, Alfredo Rivero and David Manson. O Som Do Jazz is active with performances at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Ybor Jazz Festival, Mod Miami, Historic Asolo Theatre and in many other special events and festivals. 

Antonio Adolfo is a man of many significant accomplishments in the world of music. Stevie Wonder, Earl Klugh, Nara Leao, Wilson Simonal, Ivete Sangalo, Leci Brandao, Emilio Santiago, Beth Carvalho, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, Herb Alpert and Dionne Warwick - have all performed or recorded his compositions.  His compositions and production work are mainstays in Brazilian television and film.  As an award-winning pianist, Antonio Adolfo is among the elite of Rio de Janeiro's jazz scene where his talent was nurtured with the Bossa Nova movement of the 1960s. As a young man, he toured with legendary Brazilian singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. 
As a musician and arranger he has worked with some of the most representative Brazilian names, besides having released more than 25 albums under his name.  In 1977 he launched his independent label Artezanal.

General Admission

General Admission for each evening concert is $10, only available at the Music Center one hour before the scheduled concert.
SPC students and staff have free admission, with college ID.
