The Jazz Ensemble

jazz band
Dr. David Manson - Director

The Jazz Ensemble is a select group of musicians chosen by audition from the St. Petersburg College student body and from the community. Both music majors and non-music majors are eligible to perform in the big band.

The bands (MUN 1710), under the direction of Dr. David Manson, perform a full range of styles including traditional swing, bebop, fusion, Latin jazz and contemporary jazz. Each year the ensembles play several concerts both on and off campus. There are two big bands. One section meets on Monday & Friday from 1 - 2:15 PM and an evening big band meets every Tuesday from 7 - 9:40 PM.

Improvisation, style and ensemble playing are emphasized. Listening/coaching sessions and lectures by outstanding outstanding jazz and improvisation artists are frequent activities of this program with recent master classes given by Sam Rivers, Haroldo Mauro, Jr., Mike Lee, Joe McPhee, Davey Williams, and Ted Rosenthal.
