Stanford University Press, Stanford, California, USA.  Originally printed in 1956, this book includes useful descriptions of several Costa Rican ecosystems as well as many of the plants species located there. Dichotomous keys are provided for identification of many tree species.

Skutch, A.F. 1992. A naturalist in Costa Rica. University Press of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA.  Written for a biologically literate lay audience, but full of interesting information about this naturalists experiences in Costa Rica. Although Skutch is a bird expert, this book includes tidbits of the life history of an array of non-bird species as well.
