Energy

St. Petersburg College has made great strides in making our buildings more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. We currently have 2.47 million square feet of space throughout our eight campuses that has been upgraded over the past several years to reduce overall energy consumption.

SPC recently hired Diana Wright, Manager of Energy and Mechanical Services to identify future energy conservation projects. With the help of the Facilities Department, a comprehensive energy plan was established to help SPC reduce energy usage.

Initiatives in lighting and mechanical systems already underway include:

  • lighting retrofits to increase lumen output with lower wattage
  • raising unoccupied temperature set points
  • increasing the occupied temperature set points to industry standards
  • upgrading our mechanical systems to higher efficiency equipment
  • changing the operation of mechanical and lighting systems to use the least amount of
energy based on occupancy and load levels

St. Petersburg College makes every reasonable attempt to purchase Energy Star qualified equipment, electronics and appliances.  In addition, the college encourages employees to program computer monitors, CPUs and other applicable equipment to power down after extended nonuse periods.

SPC currently has a $25,000, 800SF photovoltaic solar thin film installation on the roof of the Natural Science, Mathematics and College of Education building. The College recently secured an additional $125,000 to install thin film photovoltaic solar paneling for use as a teaching tool to be installed on the roof of the new Ethics and Social Science building.
