New law impacts transfer students

During the 2009 Florida legislative session, statute 1009.286 was passed. This law requires students who transfer to one of Florida’s state universities to complete their bachelor’s degrees with the fewest courses possible.

Effective for new students entering a state college or university for the first time in the fall of 2009, any student who transfers to a state university may pay a surcharge equal to 50 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 120 percent of the number of credit hours required to complete the student’s bachelor’s degree program.

For example, if the length of the bachelor’s program is 120 credit hours, you may be subject to this excess hour surcharge for any credits attempted beyond 144 credit hours (120 x 120%).

All grades – including grades of W (Withdrawal) and F (Failing) – are considered in the number of credits attempted. There are some exceptions, such as withdrawals due to medical emergencies and credits taken by active duty military students. However, you should be aware of the importance of successfully completing the courses that you are enrolled in now and the ramifications of accumulating too many hours.

There are a number of learning support centers at St. Petersburg College that can provide tutoring and academic support to help you be successful in each class:
