The Honors College at SPC, was established in November 2003, and since December 2003 has been a member of the National, Regional and State Collegiate Honors Associations and Florida/Campus Compact (service learning and civic engagement through campus - community partnership.) The Honors College is an intellectual learning community encompassing honor students, student honorary groups, honors courses, honors programs, interdisciplinary honors courses, seminars, colloquia, independent study, undergraduate research opportunities, international study abroad programs, graduation recognition events, honors cords, honors scholarships and many other attributes and challenging activities. The SPC Honors College provides a unique opportunity for greater intellectual depth and personal growth for our students.

In Fall 2004, 52 students were accepted into the Honors College. These students were all awarded with a merit scholarship, they each have a private mentor, a personal advisor and they participate in the challenging Honors Freshman Cornerstone Seminar.




HONORS COLLEGE MISSION

The mission of The Honors College is to provide an exemplary education and build an intellectual community that encourages creativity, deeper understanding, leadership qualities, and critical thinking skills for our most talented and motivated students. We will achieve this by developing unique educational opportunities and activities to challenge and enhance academic depth and personal growth through:

  • Excellent, highly developed, and enriched honors courses and programs, honors curricula, honors seminars and symposia.
  • Outstanding faculty to teach Honors courses
  • Assistance with applying for scholarships to college and postgraduate schools
  • Transfer opportunities to selective, nationally renowned colleges and universities An outstanding learning environment, facilities and special services.
  • A variety of leadership and service-learning opportunities and varied cultural and social activities

We are analyzing the practices of other in-state and out-of-state honors colleges in order to create the strongest infra-structure for the SPC program. We plan to offer the greatest honors opportunities for our future students.

ADMISSION AND CONTINUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR HONORS COLLEGE

Students may enroll in the SPC Honors College

  • directly from high school
  • after completing one or more semesters at SPC
  • when transferring to SPC from another college or university.
Students must complete the Honors College Application (which is available in PDF format for downloading at http://www.spcollege.edu/honorscollege) and meet the following requirements:

Admission Requirements for High School Students:

  • Be in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class or earned a high school cumulative GPA average 3.5 or higher OR
  • Achieved a score 1200 or higher on the SAT OR
  • Achieved a score 26 or higher on the ACT OR
  • Achieved a score 100 or higher on the English and reading and 72 on the mathematics portions of the College Placement Test AND
  • Have a satisfactory written essay score on the special topic.

Admission Requirements for SPC Current Students and Transfer Students:

  • Have earned a cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least 12 college credit hours or
    more of college course work (excluding preparatory courses) OR
  • Be an active member of Phi Theta Kappa (or other Honors Societies) OR
  • Present a recommendation for admission to the Honors College from a faculty member, Campus Coordinator, Honors College Director, Assistant Director, Program Director or Honors College counselor who is familiar with your course work AND
  • Have a satisfactory written essay score on the special topic.

Requirements to remain in the Honors College (Continuation requirements):
  • Have earned a GPA of 3.3 or greater in Honors courses and be enrolled in an average of 6 credit hours of Honors courses for each term.
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater by end of the aca¬demic year.
  • Be involved in service-learning projects and/or extra-curricular activities each term.

Honors College Requirements for Graduation with Honors Diploma or Honors Certificate:

  • Have earned 24 credit hours of honors-designated courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher for the Honors Diploma OR
  • Have earned 12 credit hours of honors-designated courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for the Honors Certificate AND
  • Have completed and participated in several service-learning projects (independent or as a component of the honors course) and /or extra-curricular activities AND
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 in honors-designated courses.

  • Small classes (average class size is 15-18)

HONORS INTERDISCIPLIN ARY STUDIES PROGRAM – CLEARWATER CAMPUS

Students do not have to be accepted into the Honors College to enroll in IDS, but they must have program director approval or meet the course criteria.


  • IDS covers 27 hours of SPC general education credits:

SPECIAL ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES – INTERN ATIONAL STUDY ABROAD COURSES

The Honors College offers nine summer study abroad programs with opportunities to receive the honors credit in Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, Italy, Mexico and Costa Rica.

HONORS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

There are several types of Honors College Scholarships designed for the various stages and levels of achievement for students enrolled in the Honors College: Titans, Excellence, Academic, Book Awards, and Study Abroad. All students must have applied to and be accepted into the Honors College to be eligible for one of these scholarships. Furthermore, each of the above-mentioned scholarship types has specific criteria for the individual student to qualify. These qualification criteria include students’ academic scores, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or service-learning project, and other academic achievements.
