The Center of Excellence (COE) uses group achievement strategies to increase
the pool of African-American and other historically underrepresented students who are prepared,
motivated and qualified to enter higher education.
Center of Excellence includes three components:
- National Achievers Society — identifies and
acknowledges high-achieving African-American students. Middle and high school students are
eligible for membership in this society and
must make at least two A's and no C's - unless the C is earned in an
advanced or honors course.
- Black History and Culture Brain Bowl — educates African-American youth about the role and contributions of
African-American and other minorities in the United States through
participation in local, regional and state academic competition.
- Academic Enrichment Centers — provide
after-school tutoring sites around the community to supplement
student learning experiences.
Services offered through COE include:
- Trips to area colleges/universities and cultural activities
- SAT/ACT practice sessions
- Workshops and seminars on test taking and study skill strategies,
time management, conflict resolution and personal development
- After-school tutoring
