What follows is information about requesting reclassification that may help you complete this process successfully.

REQUEST FOR RECLASSIFICATION OF FLORIDA RESIDENCY
FOR TUITION PURPOSES

As an applicant for admission, you were required to make a statement on the Application for Admission as to the length of your residency in Florida. At that particular time, you did not meet the residency requirement for tuition purposes. Therefore, you were classified as out-of-state for tuition purposes and tuition fees were assessed accordingly.

In this application, you are requesting St. Petersburg College to reclassify you as a resident of the state of Florida for tuition purposes. You MUST satisfactorily prove to the Records Office that you (or your parent or guardian, if a dependent) have been a legal resident of Florida for at least twelve months and you have not been living in Florida for the purpose of obtaining an education. THE BURDEN OF PROOF RESTS WITH YOU. Please note that an out-of-state student who comes to Florida to enroll in college and remains continuously enrolled will not normally meet the Florida residency requirement for in-state tuition regardless of the length of time in Florida.

The Florida Statute on residency, FS 240.1201, classifies a student as a dependent or independent student based on United States Internal Revenue Service Income Tax Codes. If you provide 50% or more of your own support, you will normally be classified as an independent student.

Please use the reverse side of the application form for requesting reclassification as a Florida resident for tuition purposes. You MUST provide documentation. ALL documents are subject to verification and you may be requested to provide additional documentation. You will not be reclassified until St. Petersburg College is satisfied that you meet the legal requirements of a Florida resident for tuition purposes.

The following information may be required as evidence of your claim that you qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes. Most of the information must be dated twelve months prior to the first day of classes for the term for which you are seeking reclassification. Other evidence may be considered by the Registrar’s Office:

  1. Proof of purchase of your permanent home in Florida (you live and file federal income taxes from this Florida address).

  2. Florida Vehicle Registration (twelve months prior to first day of classes for the term for which you are seeking reclassification).

  3. Florida Voter’s Registration (twelve months prior to first day of classes for the term for which you are seeking reclassification).

  4. Professional/Occupational License in Florida.

  5. Florida Driver’s License (twelve months prior to first day of classes for the term for which you are seeking reclassification).

  6. Full-time, permanent employment in Florida (verified by your employer).

  7. Purchase of Florida real property for the purpose of living in and maintaining the property as a Florida resident, with no residency status in another state.

  8. Part-time, permanent employment (excludes summer employment, employment for a few months, etc.).

  9. Documentation from a Florida financial institution (on accounts for twelve months prior to first day of classes for the term for which you are seeking reclassification).

  10. Permanent Resident Alien or other legal alien granted indefinite stay and has maintained domicile in Florida for at least 12 consecutive months. (Must show INS documentation.)

  11. Copy of military order DD2058.

  12. Spouse of a Florida resident. (Must show proof of spouse’s residence and marriage license.)

If you are a dependent, you MUST have the person (claimant) who provides your support complete the reverse side of this form and provide the required documentation.
