Up close and personal
Amy DeYoung found what she needed - close to home.
Amy DeYoung had been considering a return to school for four years. She did an Internet search for educational resources for single moms returning to school and connected with St. Petersburg College’s Women on the Way program. Sharon Coil, Instructor-in-Charge of the program, gave her step-by-step instructions on how to register.
“It just really made it a whole lot easier for me to take that first step,” said DeYoung, mother of 6-year-old Tyler. “SPC is affordable, and it has a lot of locations so it’s convenient.”
Today, DeYoung, a member of Phi Theta Kappa (the community college honor society), is working on her Associate in Arts degree and plans to transfer to the University of South Florida to earn a degree in Social Work. Her goal is to work in geriatrics, particularly with Alzheimer’s patients.
DeYoung also is taking a class online and says the flexibility of the course makes it convenient to incorporate school into an already busy schedule.
“I put Tyler to bed at 8:30 p.m., and that’s my school time,” DeYoung said.
Her educational pursuits meet with Tyler’s approval, too.
“At first he had a couple of questions, like ‘why are you going to school when I’m going to school?’ He thought it was silly,” DeYoung said. “I told him that I didn’t have a chance to go to school after high school, so I’m going back to college now. He thinks it’s cool.”
