Getting that extra support
Ashley Donald hadn’t planned on attending St. Petersburg College, but she found that it was convenient and offered small class sizes – something she found more attractive than the stadium-sized classes her friends found at major universities.
“St. Petersburg College is more personable and the teachers are great,” Donald said. “The campus is pretty and the classes are more affordable, much more affordable.”
Upon enrolling at SPC, Donald connected with the Student Support Services program, a federally funded program that helps students stay on track in college by helping them use college resources more effectively and providing and finding services that support academic, social and emotional needs.
Donald makes use of the program’s textbook lending program, and program mentors help her select classes and show her how to use campus services. The program also helps her track her academic progress.
“I’m a very organized person but I don’t know a lot about college because I’m the first in my family to go to college,” Donald said. “So SSS helps me out a lot.”
