Up close and personal
Marie Sterlin knows diversity.
Marie Sterlin was used to living among people from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds in Brooklyn, N.Y. So when she came to St. Petersburg College, she was pleased with the college’s diversity.

“You meet a lot of people from different places here,” Sterlin said. “It’s like a pretty big melting pot.”
Sterlin came to SPC because of the strong recommendations of cousins and friends who had gone here. So after establishing her residency in Florida, she enrolled at the college and became active in Student Government and Campus Crusade for Christ, meeting students from around the world.
She says SPC staff and students are friendly and that there is always someone around to help.
“SPC is like a home away from home; like an extended family,” Sterlin said.
But being around people from a variety of backgrounds on her campus is not the only thing that impresses Sterlin about SPC; she also is pleased with the college’s academic excellence.
“The quality of education is good,” said Sterlin, who is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Nursing to become a labor and delivery nurse. “I love all my professors.”
