Susie Palma knows where to get help.

As a student preparing for SPC’s nursing program, Susie Palma is taking classes that can be tough, such as algebra and anatomy. However, with help from instructors and resources, such as tutoring and labs, Palma is able to get the help she needs to boost her knowledge.

Susie PalmaPalma receives free math tutoring at her campus’ Information Commons. She builds on her science skills by studying models and using equipment during open hours in the natural science labs.
“The labs and tutors make you want to study more because they make it easier and more fun to study,” Palma said.

It is this kind of help that affirms Palma’s decision to come to SPC. She heard from a high school friend that the college was a great school and offered credits that transferred to major universities. Upon arrival, Palma encountered friendly counselors who seemed eager to help her pick out classes.

She also found instructors who were patient and willing to make sure their students understood the subjects. For instance, her anatomy instructor will tell jokes and  stories  to help students remember parts of the anatomy, such as the tensor fasciae latae, a muscle in the thigh.

“He said the best way to remember this is to remember that when a woman is tense, she gets a facial and a latte,” Palma said.

But Palma’s life is filled with much more than facials and lattes. In addition to her studies, Palma, who came to this country from Honduras five years ago, is working to form a club for Latino students on her campus.
