SPC Facts
A tradition of excellence
St. Petersburg College was founded in 1927 as a private, non-profit community college in downtown St. Petersburg. Today, this public institution has 10 learning sites throughout Pinellas County. In June 2001, Florida’s governor signed legislation making SPC the first community college in the state to offer four-year degrees. However, the college’s commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever. Quick links for this page include:
What the college offers
Associate in Arts (A.A.) degrees — Students can choose from more than 200 majors that transfer to virtually any accredited university worldwide. If students want to stay in Florida, an A.A. degree from SPC, by law, grants them admission as a junior to one of the state’s 10 public universities.
Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees — Students gain skills for careers in as little as two years. A.S. degrees enable students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation and allow those already in fields to upgrade their job skills. A.S. degrees in some fields grant students admission to other private and public universities.
Applied Technology Diploma (ATD) — An ATD is part of an Associate in Science degree (A.S.) or an Associate in Applied Science degree (A.A.S.), but is less than 60 credit hours. An Applied Technology Diploma program may consist of either vocational or college credit and can lead to employment in specific occupations.
Bachelor's degrees — St. Petersburg College offers more than 20 specific bachelor’s degrees in the following disciplines: Banking, Dental Hygiene, Education, Interdisciplinary Health and Human Studies, International Business, Management and Organizational Leadership, Nursing, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Paralegal, Public Safety Administration, Technology Management, and Veterinary Technology.
Certificates — Students can prepare for new professions or enhance existing job skills. In some cases, students can complete a certificate within a year.
University Partnership Center (UPC) — Students can take courses on an SPC site to earn bachelor’s and graduate degrees in a variety of majors from one of several colleges and universities partnering with SPC.
Credit vs. non-credit
Credit is a unit of measure assigned to courses or course equivalent learning. Credit is awarded if the learning activity it represents is part of, or preparatory for, an organized and specified program leading to a postsecondary certificate or degree. Credit is a device that indicates to the learner, to educational institutions, to employers and to others how much of the program the learner has completed.
Non credit – Non credit is a term indicating that credit, as defined above, is not awarded. It applies, in the case of community colleges, to the instructional classifications of supplemental, adult basic and secondary, citizenship and recreational. The unit of measure is hours of instruction. Definitions are taken from St. Petersburg College’s Curriculum and Instruction Manual.
College credentials
St. Petersburg College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097; telephone number (404) 679-4501) to award associate’s degrees and bachelor’s degrees.
