St. Petersburg College continues to strengthen its training programs in Semiconductor, Mechatronics, Automation and Robotics Training (SMART) Tech by launching two new classes in February 2026. These short-term training programs prepare graduates for quick entry into the technologically evolving manufacturing fields of semiconductors, mechatronics, automation and robotics.
Trainees may be eligible for scholarships that cover full tuition, books and materials, thanks to $3.2 million in funding from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund.
February 2026 SMART Tech Programs
Classes beginning in February include Electronic Board Assembly Operator and Robotics and Semiconductor Technician. Both programs offer valuable industry certifications that equip graduates with the credentials they need to be job-ready on day one.
An Automated Production Technician Program that includes three industry certifications will also launch in 2026.
"We see resurgent demand for manufacturing across the United States, particularly here in Pinellas County,” said McKenna Kelley, Enterprise Content and Media Manager for Jabil, an engineering-led, supply chain-enabled global manufacturing company headquartered in St. Petersburg. “This advanced manufacturing relies heavily on automation, robotics and artificial intelligence and our prospective workers must be proficient in and certified to operate these critical technologies. The SMART tech programs at St. Petersburg College will provide the training and hands-on experience the future workforce needs to be ready for the next generation of manufacturing.”
Florida Manufacturing Employment Continues to Grow
According to the Florida Department of Commerce, Florida’s manufacturing industry totaled 434,600 jobs in March 2025 — an increase of 5,700 jobs compared to the previous year. The state is now home to 27,310 manufacturing establishments, marking a 32% increase since 2019.
The industry continues to expand, with Powering Florida reporting that Florida ranks second in the nation for manufacturing job growth.
“These programs provide exactly the kind of hands-on, industry-recognized training that employers are asking for,” said Belinthia Berry, Dean of SPC’s Workforce Development. “By preparing students to work with the technologies powering today’s manufacturing sector, we’re helping them secure better jobs and better lives while strengthening Florida’s economic future.”

New Semiconductor Academic Pathways
The College will introduce additional opportunities in semiconductor training next year, to include a certificate and an associate’s degree, both supported by the Workforce Development Capitalization Incentive (CAP) Grant.
- The 18-credit Semiconductor Cleanroom Operator Certificate will teach participants cleanroom technology safety so they can maintain and operate cleanroom facilities aligned with the protocols of a sterile environment.
- A Semiconductor Manufacturing Subplan in SPC’s Associate in Science Degree in Engineering Technology. will provide a deeper dive into chip-making technology, equipment and design, and prepare students to operate electronics manufacturing and semiconductor processing equipment. The degree transfers to four-year universities that offer a Bachelor of Applied Science.
Pinellas County Leads in Advanced Manufacturing
Florida continues to lead as a global center for Advanced Manufacturing and Semiconductor innovation, with Pinellas County serving as a major industry hub. The county is home to internationally recognized manufacturers such as Jabil, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Plasma-Therm and Bigorre Aerospace. SPC’s new and upcoming technician training programs offer industry leaders a steady talent pipeline for growing workforce demand.
