How to file Grievances and Appeals
At St. Petersburg College (SPC), we are committed to ensuring fairness and transparency in all student-related decisions. If you believe a decision was made in error or your rights were violated, you may file an appeal or grievance or through the appropriate process.
What is an appeal?
An appeal is a formal request to change a decision made by the college.
Types of Appeals
Academic Appeals
- Are electronically submitted to and addressed by the Dean's Office, using this form, in writing via email or in person. Be sure to include all pertinent facts and dates to support the appeal as well as appropriate third party documentation (if required).
- The Dean's Office will verify that the informal resolution process has been followed.
- If the informal process has been followed, the campus Academic Appeals Committee will review the details of the appeal and render a decision in writing.
- If the student is not satisfied with the decision of the Academic Appeals Committee, he/she can appeal to the Dean.
- The written decision of the Dean is final.
Non-Academic Appeals
- Are electronically submitted to and addressed by the Associate Provost's Office, using this form. Be sure to include appropriate third-party documentation. Examples: doctor's letter with signature, military orders, etc. The form and supporting paperwork may also be delivered in person.
- The Associate Provost will verify the informal resolution process has been followed.
- If the informal process has been followed, the Associate Provost will review the details of the appeal and render a decision in writing.
- If the student is not satisfied with the decision of the Associate Provost, he/she can appeal to the Provost.
- The written decision of the Dean is final.
Timelines
- Appeals must be filed within 60 days of the end of the term.
- Decisions are typically issued within 10 working days, unless extended due to extenuating circumstances.

- A grievance is a formal complaint that alleges a violation of rights without rational basis or in bad faith.

Grievance Process
- Informal Resolution
Speak directly with the employee or faculty member involved. If unsure who to contact, consult the Associate Provost. - Formal Submission
If unresolved, submit a grievance form with detailed information and supporting documentation.
Discrimination Report Form - Review and Decision
The EA/EO Officer will verify that informal resolution was attempted, review the grievance, and issue a written decision.
Reporting Sexual Harassment

Grievance related to Accessibility
Students or third parties who have a disability discrimination grievance, including disputes over accommodations, inaccessible programs or activities, harassment, or any other discriminatory actions based on actual or perceived disability, in violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) should follow College Procedure P6Hx23-4.364. As described in this Procedure, if you wish to file a formal disability or accessibility related grievance, complete the Discrimination Report Form.
