The year-long program is designed to equip officers with tools to manage job-related stress, support their peers and respond to mental health crises in the field and within their departments.

SPC President Dr. Tonjua Williams commended the graduates for leading with purpose and compassion.

“Today, we honor more than academic achievement. We honor a shift in how we support those who protect us,” Williams said. “This program reflects a bold truth. That truth is that mental health is not secondary. It is central to public safety. Our officers face extraordinary challenges, and they deserve tools to navigate those moments with resilience, empathy and strength. At SPC, we believe education should empower. And this program does just that. It gives officers the skills to lead with compassion, respond with insight, and build trust where it is needed most.”

Changing the narrative

The mental health challenges facing first responders continue to grow. According to national data and recently highlighted by FOX 13 Tampa Bay, law enforcement officers experience elevated rates of PTSD, depression and suicide—conditions often worsened by stigma and limited access to care. Suicide rates among officers remain nearly double those of the general population. Programs like SPC’s Applied Mental Health Certificate are designed to change that narrative, offering officers practical tools, trauma-informed knowledge and long-term support strategies.

Graduates of the program are now qualified to serve as mental health liaisons within their agencies. Each has committed to a minimum of three years in this role, offering peer support and contributing to healthier, more responsive law enforcement environments.

As part of their final project, the second cohort created a centralized First Responder Resources website, hosted by SPC, to support the mental health and wellness of their peers and the broader public safety community.

The site includes regional and national support services, peer-reviewed guidance, and tools for early intervention. They also produced public education materials like a prevention rack card—a quick-reference flyer promoting mental health awareness and de-escalation techniques in the field.

Collaboration and partnership

Dr. Brandy Benson, CEO and chief psychologist of Tampa Bay Psychology Associates, delivered the ceremony’s keynote address. As a recognized expert in public safety psychology, Benson spoke to the graduating class and their families, expressing her understanding and pride in their challenging positions.

Sasha Lohn, general counsel and executive director of the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association, also delivered remarks. Lohn reflected on the emotional and professional significance of the program, telling graduates, “The way you serve your community, you deserve to be served back. You deserve to be poured back into.” Quoting Maya Angelou, she reminded officers that, while actions and words may fade, the feeling one leaves behind makes a lasting impact. She emphasized the power of combining frontline experience with academic training, saying it is the greatest privilege of her life to work alongside them. “Our first responders deserve to have mental health counselors like you,” she said. “You've made us feel so proud of the work you do.”

Lohn and Jonathan Vazquez, president of the Suncoast PBA, were among the local leaders who helped establish the certificate program in collaboration with SPC officials and with support from St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway. State legislators also played a critical role in securing funding to bring the program to life.

Also in attendance were college leaders, faculty and supporters of the program, including representatives from the Pepin Family Foundation. The Pepin Family Foundation and the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Foundation fully fund the tuition for the courses in the three-semester program.

During the ceremony, the graduating class presented SPC faculty with a handcrafted wooden plaque featuring symbols representing police, fire and EMS. Graduating officers gave the plaque as a gesture of thanks and appreciation for the faculty’s guidance and served as a symbol of solidarity among all first responders. The thoughtful gift highlighted the strong bonds formed over the course of the program and the officers’ shared commitment to mental wellness.

Dr. Williams closed the ceremony by praising the graduating class and SPC faculty: “To our graduates: You are pioneers. Her training includes work with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the VA, and local police and fire departments. Benson is also a published author in FBI and law enforcement journals and has practiced across Florida since 2012, with expertise in trauma, crisis intervention, and psychological evaluations.

Mental health challenges among law enforcement officers remain a serious concern. A 2024 Lancet Psychiatry study found that 25% of officers show PTSD symptoms — twice the rate of the general population — and nearly 1 in 5 experience traumatic brain injuries. Around 140 officers die by suicide annually in the U.S., more than double the number killed in the line of duty, with a suicide rate of 18–20 per 100,000 compared to 14 in the public. These figures reflect a growing crisis driven by repeated trauma and stigma around seeking help.

“We’re proud to recognize this exceptional group of officers completing the Applied Mental Health Certificate,” said Dr. Joseph Smiley, Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Human Services at SPC. “This training strengthens officer wellness, enhances community outcomes, and serves as a vital peer resource. Also, we eagerly anticipate welcoming a new cohort of officers in the upcoming fall. Additionally, we are excited to announce that we are in the process of developing a program tailored for fire and rescue first responders.”

Thanks to the generous support of the Pepin Family Foundation, all tuition costs for participating officers in this mental health training program are fully covered. This critical funding removes financial barriers, allowing first responders to access essential resources at no cost to themselves or their departments.

“Supporting the mental health of first responders is personal to our foundation,” said Tina Pepin, Director of the Pepin Family Foundation. “By providing education, proactive resiliency training and resources, we’re helping individuals process trauma in healthier ways — protecting their well-being and strengthening the communities they serve. We are proud to partner with Sun Coast PBA, Chief of Police Association Foundation, SPC and law enforcement agencies to step into a more fortified future for our first responders and front-line professionals.”

SPC faculty also praised the dedication of the most recent group of participating officers. The 2025 graduating class comprises 13 police officers, detectives, sergeants, and lieutenants from St. Petersburg, Largo, Bradenton, Tampa, and Tampa Airport police departments.

The officers are:

St. Petersburg Police Department

Officer Alyson Conley

Officer Michelle Fotovat

Detective Rachel Hunter

Officer Dominque King

Officer Melissa Kobonin

Detective Jill Rayn

Largo Police Department

Detective Stephanie Blitz-Trnka

Officer Alex Rocha

Tampa Airport Police Department

Mr. David DiSano (Retired Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office)

Bradenton Police Department

Officer Jordon Poulos

Tampa Police Department

Lieutenant Roni Hill

Sergeant Sarah Michelson

Officer Angelica Torres

The year-long program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage job-related stressors effectively, as well as to assist fellow officers and community members facing mental health challenges. Throughout their training, officers develop a variety of skills, including:

Emotional intelligence, counseling skills and interview techniques to effectively support individuals experiencing mental health crises.

The ability to identify mental health issues in need of appropriate assessment in professional practice

Access to resources to successfully navigate peers to a higher level of care, when needed.

Upon completion, participants are now qualified to act as mental health liaisons within their respective agencies. This role offers an additional layer of support for fellow officers in need. The graduating officers have committed to serving in this capacity for a minimum of three years, ensuring sustained impact and continuous support within the law enforcement community.

When: Monday, July 28

Meet and Greet: 2:30 p.m.

Program: 3 p.m.

Where: SPC’s Allstate Center, 3200 34th St. S., St. Petersburg | Interview and photo opportunities (during the event or separately):

Dr. Matthew Liao-Troth, Vice President of Academic Affairs, SPC

Dr. Joseph Smiley, Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Human Services, SPC

Dr. Latresha Moore, Director, Human Services Program, SPC

Dr. Brandy Benson, keynote speaker

Agencies interested in having offices attend the program, please reach out to Dr. Latresha Moore at bighemmoore.latresh@spcollege.edu or Dr. Meredith Moran at moran.meredith@spcollege.edu
","Date":"2025-07-22T16:01:00","FeaturedImage":{"isValid":true,"src":"/Images/Newsroom/amhc-2025-class.jpg","w":"","h":"","alt":"Second Cohort of Officers in uniform who graduated from the Mental Health Certificate program"},"Headline":"SPC Will Honor Second Cohort of First Responders Completing Mental Health Certificate","Link":{"isValid":true,"url":"spc-newsroom/spc-will-honor-second-cohort-of-first-responders-completing-mental-health-certificate","value":{},"title":"SPC Will Honor Second Cohort of First Responders Completing Mental Health Certificate","target":"","isCurrent":false,"attributes":{}},"OpenGraphDescription":"Another group of active police officers are better equipped to navigate mental health issues now that they've earned their appled Mental Health Certificate from SPC.","ThumbnailImage":{"isValid":true,"src":"/Images/Newsroom/amhc-2025-class-sm.jpg","w":"","h":"","alt":"Second Cohort of officers in uniform who graduated from the Mental Health Certificate program"},"Title":"SPC Will Honor Second Cohort of First Responders Completing Mental Health Certificate"},{"Author":"","Blurb":"","CategoryIds":"2308|2338","Content":"
ST.
