To assist any members of the College community who experience any such discrimination, including sexual harassment, violence and misconduct, the Equal Access/Equal Opportunity (Equity) Office is available and ready to assist in seeking prompt, fair resolutions, as well as to offer resources and support. The Equity Office does not advocate for any party in such conflicts, but instead provides an impartial, equitable process to ensure compliance with College policies, state and federal laws. Additionally, the Equity Office is available to informally discuss complaints or concerns without recourse to College procedure and to ascertain the best course of action in accordance with institutional policies.

Dr. Devona Pierre, Equity & Diversity Officer, coordinates the College's efforts to comply with federal and state laws regarding non-discrimination (including but not limited to, Title IX and Section 504) and carries out the College's responsibilities associated with inquiries and complaints alleging discrimination.

Types of Discrimination / Protected Categories

Protected Categories

A protected category/class is a group of people who qualify for certain protection under a law or policy. For example, the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is one anti-discrimination law that protects certain groups of people (i.e. under this Act people are protected from discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex and national origin). Under this Act, and other federal anti-discrimination laws (like the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act), a person may not be discriminated against based on certain characteristics. Everyone has protection of these state and federal anti-discrimination laws.
