Krishna Sadasivam
Wherever we look, we’re inundated with digital media, from our phones to stores and billboards, even at gas stations. As the digital world continues to grow, so does the need for digital creatives like Krishna Sadasivam.
A freelance artist for more than 20 years, Krishna has been teaching digital media, graphic design and illustration for three years at SPC. His goal as an instructor is to help students gain the confidence to take chances and express themselves.
“In the beginning, students are a little fearful or unsure of themselves, but my goal is to let them know they can let go and be a positive force,” said Krishna. “I enjoy seeing that lightbulb go off.”
He’s inspired every day by his students and colleagues and enjoys learning and trying new things. In fact, when his students encouraged him to create his own YouTube channel to share his unique lessons and techniques, he was surprised to see it quickly gain more than 3,000 followers.
“I never fancied myself as a professor. I was an engineer by profession,” said Krishna, who went back to school in his late 20’s for art and made the career change to freelance artist. “When I graduated, I thought teaching was a good way to continue to work and give back but ended up really enjoying it.”
His students have gone on to work for companies like Nickelodeon and Zynga, and he’s excited to see the growth of the digital media department at SPC, including a new Bachelor of Applied Science coming this fall that will include business skills for artists.
“In today’s gig economy, a lot of designers rely on freelance. I had to learn about the business by reading, talking to people and making a ton of mistakes,” he said. “This bachelor’s will give students the tools they need to be successful before they leave. They’ll be much more equipped to manage their careers.”
Krishna says he feels blessed to come to work every day at SPC. Check out his artwork and illustrations on Krishna's website.
