Natavia Middleton
For Dr. Natavia Middleton, no two days at SPC are ever the same — and that’s exactly what keeps her energized.
As Dean of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Manufacturing, Building Arts and Veterinary Technology, Dr. Middleton embraces the dynamic nature of her role. “I’m never bored,” she said. “There’s always something else to work towards or change or edit.”
She’s especially drawn to the transformation she sees in both students and faculty over time. Whether it’s a student finding their stride or a faculty member evolving in their teaching, Dr. Middleton sees these shifts as part of a larger process.
“I love to see that change, that metamorphosis and life cycle of when they start to when they finish,” she said.
They are words that reflect both her scientific roots and her belief in the power of evolution and growth.
Having just marked her ten-year anniversary at SPC, Dr. Middleton reflects on the people who make the College feel like home. She’s inspired by colleagues who go above and beyond, not only for students, but for each other. That sense of community and shared purpose is what fuels her.
“It’s a place where people do a lot because they care a lot,” she said. “They’ll bend over backwards to help you or help a student.”
Dr. Middleton finds her greatest joy, though, in moments of student success, especially at graduation. She plays an active role in distributing diploma covers, standing close enough to witness the pride and emotion firsthand. “Especially if it’s a student I know,” she said, “to be the first person they hug when they cross that stage, that’s probably my favorite.”
Outside of work, Dr. Middleton’s young son brings joy and laughter to her day. Whether popping into online meetings or sharing his love of dinosaurs, he’s a bright presence in her world. “Let’s just say I feel like he works here some days,” she joked.
Known for her authenticity and encouragement, Dr. Middleton consistently uplifts those around her. Her thoughtful gestures and genuine care have made a lasting impression on many across the College. She’s widely regarded as someone who brings out the best in others, valued not only for her leadership but for the warmth and sincerity she brings to every interaction. To those who work with her, she’s seen as a “true jewel” within the SPC community, quietly brilliant and impossible not to appreciate.
