Latresha Moore
As SPC’s Human Services Program Director, Dr. Latresha Moore has been instrumental in creating new certificate and degree programs. While her job is focused on administration, her true passion is working directly with students.
“My entire career has been about service and serving the community,” said Latresha. “I love talking with students. They have big dreams… I tell them, make sure your skill set is diverse because in the human services field, you have to be well versed in communicating and understanding what resources are available for the people you’re serving.”
Latresha fell in love with teaching when she started as an adjunct professor at Chipola College in 2008. Since starting at SPC in 2021, she’s helped implement the Bachelor of Science in Human Services, a program that was a long time in the making, and the Applied Mental Health Certificate for first responders, the first of its kind in the state.
“My passion is to make sure our students are marketable in the real world,” she said. “Disciplines like social work and human services will pull your energy because you’re always helping others, so you have to make sure this is your passion.”
Sometimes that means telling students hard truths to help them understand the steps they need to take, and the hard work necessary to make their dreams a reality, but her students usually come away with renewed enthusiasm for the work ahead. And Latresha sees the rewards of her efforts in the thank you cards and emails she continuously gets from students.
"Even though I’m an administrator and a director, when it comes to students, for me, it’s important that we remember we were students at one point in time. That’s at the core of who we are as an institution,” she said. “That’s what we do as a state college, we take the underprepared students, and we prepare them.”
