WITHDRAWING CAN COST YOU!

Withdrawing from a class or all of your classes can have serious financial and academic consequences.

Make sure you understand the consequences of this decision.

What is the difference between withdrawing from A class and from ALL classes?

There is a difference in withdrawing from ALL classes and withdrawing from A class. In most cases, the financial aid consequences listed below are a result of withdrawing from ALL classes. The academic (grade) consequences listed below are a result of withdrawing from A class.

You will be able to withdraw yourself from A class at any time during the term by logging in to Titan Hub and selecting MySPC. However, if you wish to totally withdraw from ALL classes, you must contact an Academic Advisor.

Financial Aid Consequences

If you receive federal financial aid, withdrawing from all classes may require repayment of unearned funds. It can also affect your Satisfactory Academic Progress status and future enrollment. In addition, eligibility for future financial aid can be affected, regardless of which school you attend.

SPC is required to follow federal financial aid regulations, including calculating how much aid you earned if you do not complete all your classes. If you stop attending, you may be required to repay some or all of the aid you received for the term.

Academic Consequences

The date you withdraw from a class is a factor in determining your grade for that class.

What should I do first?

Before making changes to your enrollment, speak with a Financial Aid Counselor or an Academic Advisor to understand the impact of your decision.

What if I owe funds to SPC as a result of dropping or withdrawing from a class?

If you have a balance due from dropping or withdrawing from a class or classes or withdrawing from all classes, you must pay that balance. You may be sent to collections for failure to repay.

SPC has different withdrawal deadline dates based on the session in which you are enrolled.

Last Date to Drop with a Refund (see Last Date to Drop with a Refund for dates):

  • If you remove all classes or a class from your schedule BEFORE or ON this date, the tuition and fees for that class or classes will be removed from your student account.
  • Your financial aid may be adjusted based on your new enrollment. This could result in reduction or removal of loans or other financial aid.
  • Dropped classes do not appear on your SPC transcript and will not have a grade assigned.

Last Date to Withdraw from all classes with Financial Aid Repayment (see below for dates):

  • If you withdraw from all classes BEFORE or ON this date, you will need to repay all or part of your federal aid disbursed in that term.
  • If you withdraw from a class BEFORE or ON this date, that class will be assigned a grade of “W.”

BETWEEN the Last Date to Withdraw from all classes with Financial Aid Repayment and Last Date to Withdraw from all classes without Financial Aid Repayment (see below for dates):

  • If you withdraw from all classes BETWEEN these dates, you will NOT need to repay your federal aid disbursed in that term.
  • If you withdraw from a class BETWEEN these dates, that class will be assigned a grade of “W.”

Last Date to Withdraw from all classes without Financial Aid Repayment (see below for dates)

  • If you withdraw from all classes ON or AFTER this date, you will NOT need to repay your financial aid disbursed in that term.
  • If you withdraw from a class ON or AFTER this date, that class will be assigned a grade of “WF” which has the same impact on your GPA as an “F.”

No Show Policy

SPC requires faculty to take attendance during the first week of classes. If you do not attend at least one class within this week, you will be dropped from the class without financial liability. If you are reported as a No Show for a class, you will not be eligible to receive financial aid and you will not receive any grade for that class.

Active Participation Policy

Students must engage in class activities, discussions, and assignments. Instructors will report students who stop participating before the 60% point. Non-participating students will be withdrawn and assigned a "W" grade.

If your withdrawal (official or unofficial) results in being completely withdrawn from all courses in the term, SPC is required to perform a Return to Title IV (R2T4) calculation to determine how much of your financial aid you earned.

Official Withdrawal

An official withdrawal occurs when a student follows SPC's withdrawal process by submitting a withdrawal request through an Academic Advisor on campus, calling 727-341-4772, or submitting an online advising request.

  • You will receive a grade of “W” or “WF” depending on the date you withdraw

Unofficial Withdrawal

An unofficial withdrawal occurs when a student stops attending classes without officially withdrawing. If instructors report non-participation:

  • You will receive a grade of “WF” which has the same impact on your GPA as an “F”
  • SPC will assume attendance at the 50% point of the withdrawn course

If you are enrolled in shorter session classes (classes that do not span the full, or entire, term), you are considered modularly enrolled for financial aid purposes. The R2T4 calculation is the same, but the guidelines are different (see below).

Shorter Session Enrollment

Any First 8-Week, Weekend College, Express, Winter, or Second 8-Week sessions and Dynamically Dated classes are considered shorter sessions. You are considered enrolled in a shorter session if at least one of your enrolled classes does not span the entire length of the term. This could include:

  • Enrollment in only one shorter session class
  • Enrollment in a combination of full term and one or more shorter session classes
  • Enrollment in a combination of only shorter session classes

Shorter Session Withdrawal Exemption

To avoid being considered withdrawn from the term – and being subject to a Return to Title IV (R2T4) calculation, you must meet at least one of the following exemption requirements:

  1. Successfully complete at least one class with a passing grade of A, B, C, D or Pass
  2. Successfully complete with a passing grade of A, B, C, D or Pass at least 49% of your classes’ countable days. Countable days include all instructional days in all enrolled sessions, excluding scheduled breaks of five or more consecutive days and all days between sessions (such as weekend days)
  3. After ceasing attendance, you may provide written confirmation of your intent to attend another class that begins within 45 calendar days of your withdrawal date. This confirmation must apply to the current term and cannot reference a future term
  4. Complete coursework equal to or greater than half-time enrollment (at least 6 credit hours)

Shorter Session Withdrawal Resulting in R2T4

You are considered withdrawn from the term and subject to a Return to Title IV (R2T4) calculation if you meet either of the following:

  1. You receive a W, WF, WR, F, I or X in ALL of your classes for the term
  2. You have provided written confirmation as stated in the Shorter Session Withdrawal Exemptions above and then you receive a W, WF, WR, F, I or X in ALL of your classes for the term

Federal financial aid is awarded under the assumption that you will complete the coursework for all of your enrolled classes. If you completely withdraw, stop attending, or fail to complete any coursework, SPC is required to calculate the percentage of aid earned based on how much of the term you completed.

A Return to Title IV (R2T4) calculation must be performed if you:

  • Withdraw from all classes
  • Stop attending without officially withdrawing
  • Fail to successfully complete with an A, B, C, D or Pass for any shorter session classes

How Unearned Aid is Calculated

The amount of Title IV aid you have earned is determined by the percentage of the term completed, using the following formula:

(Completed Days  ÷  Total Scheduled Days) x 100  =  % Earned

Completed Days are counted from the start of your earliest class to your withdrawal date. For official withdrawals, this is the date you notified SPC of your intent to withdraw. For unofficial withdrawals, where no official notification is provided, the withdrawal date is assumed to be the 50% point of the term.

The number of Total Scheduled Days includes all days in all sessions, excluding scheduled breaks of five or more consecutive days.

The amount of unearned funds that SPC will return, is determined using the following formula:

100%  -  % Earned =  % Unearned

See a sample calculation below.

Important: The amount of financial aid that must be returned is based on federal regulations and is separate from SPC’s tuition refund policy.

Return of Unearned Aid

Any unearned aid will be returned to federal programs in the following order:

  1. Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
  2. Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans
  3. Federal PLUS Loans
  4. Federal Pell Grants
  5. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Repayment Responsibilities

  • Grants – federal regulations require that 50% of the grant funds you received that were unearned. SPC will return the funds on your behalf, and you will be billed accordingly.
  • Student loans – any student loan funds that must be returned will follow the repayment terms of your Master Promissory Note. This means payments will be scheduled according to your loan agreement.

See Bright Futures for more information on repayment if you receive a grade of W, WF, F or I.

Notification of Return of Funds

SPC will notify you by MySPC student email when an R2T4 calculation is performed. This notification will include:

  • The total amount of aid received and the unearned amount returned
  • Payment options and deadlines for repaying unearned funds
  • The impact on future financial aid eligibility

If you decide to withdraw from SPC, there are critical steps you should take to manage your financial aid and academic standing:
