Dear Gibbs Junior College Alumni Association,
I am grateful for being selected as a recipient of the Gibbs Junior College Alumni Association scholarship. Receiving the email about the award excited me since I was not expecting it at all. I feel honored to be supported by you and I appreciate you supporting other students at St. Petersburg College as well.
When I was first accepted into St. Petersburg College, I was still a high school student. I also participated in many activities that were intended to prepare me for college, such as the NCNW's youth group, Black Pearls. I considered attending Florida A&M University at the time, but I decided to stay home and attend St. Petersburg College.
Currently, I am pursuing my Associate in Arts degree in general education. I believe that college is an opportunity to expand one’s knowledge about any career path they choose. However, I spent my first two semesters worrying about selecting a career that I would have a passion for. I also felt a lot of pressure from my family to succeed.
My father and my grandfather both graduated from St. Petersburg College, so I know that I have big shoes to fill. I am proud to say that I have a 3.5 GPA and I am close to completing all of my graduation requirements.
I dream of pursuing a career in social work and I am thinking of returning to St. Petersburg College in the future. I would like to complete the rest of my current requirements for right now. However, I am open to the idea of returning to obtain a degree in social work.
Being selected for this award lifted a lot of anxiety I had going into this semester. Lastly, I want to thank you once again for investing in me. I feel so encouraged by your support and I am proud to say that I am prepared to graduate.
Sincerely,
Kamea Hamilton
