About St. Petersburg College

Founded in 1927, St. Petersburg College holds the distinction of being Florida’s first two-year institution. Institutionally accredited and nationally recognized, SPC became Florida’s first state college to offer bachelor’s degrees. The College now offers more than 300 programs, including associate and bachelor’s degrees, certificates, workforce certifications, transfer pathways, and short-term training opportunities. SPC’s career-focused curriculum is developed in close partnership with industry leaders, ensuring that our students gain real-world skills and are prepared to thrive in today’s workforce.

About the President

Dr. Tonjua Williams was named St. Petersburg College’s seventh president on July 3, 2017. A dynamic, transformational leader and inspiring speaker, Dr. Williams set a vision for the College to be known as Pinellas County’s engine for economic mobility. Through strategic partnerships and collaboration, under her leadership, the College has streamlined operations, consolidated resources, improved organizational fiscal health, expanded short-term/rapid credentials and strengthened alignment with Tampa Bay’s workforce.

Media Style Guide

Below are instructions for formatting and language usage for St. Petersburg College and related entities.

  • St. Petersburg College - On second reference or thereafter, the College can be referred to as SPC. (The College should never be called St. Petersburg Community College, Saint Petersburg College or St. Petersburg State College.) St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC) should only be used when referring to the history of the College.
  • St. Petersburg College is a state college, not a community college. It is one of 28 colleges in the Florida College System (FCS).

SPC has a learning sites located across Pinellas County. The correct formatting when referring to them is below. Please take note of capitalization and spacing as well as the use of Campus versus Center.

  • Bay Pines STEM Center
  • Clearwater Campus
  • Downtown Center
  • EpiCenter
  • Health Education Center — The full name of this SPC location is the Caruth Health Education Center, but the full name of the location is not required when referring to it in media.
  • Midtown Center — This SPC location is comprised of two buildings, the Cecil B. Keene, Sr. Student Achievement Center and the Douglas L. Jamerson, Jr. Midtown Center. Both locations can be referred to as Midtown Center in media. When promoting events for the location, double-check that the correct address is listed.
  • Public Safety Training Center (formerly Allstate Center)
  • Seminole Campus
  • St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus — The St. Pete/Gibbs Campus is also acceptable, but not preferred. (The location should never be called just the Gibbs Campus.)
  • Tarpon Springs Campus
  • The Palladium at St. Petersburg College — On second reference: The Palladium
